Taylor Hill saw his first action today since regional play, and he held it down for the Commodores for 7 innings as the team eliminated North Carolina from the College World Series. Vandy dominated the Tar Heels’ pitching early with 5 runs in the first 3 innings on their way to a 5-1 win.

Tony Kemp got the bats started with a triple to lead off the game, and he went on to score the only run in the first inning off the Anthony Gomez sacrifice fly. Connor Harrell then went on to blast his second homer of the CWS in the following inning, which stretched the Vandy lead to 4-0. And Curt Casali added to the early lead with a home run of his own in the third inning, which went on to be the final score for the Commodores.

Taylor Hill gets the win with 4 strikeouts and only 1 run allowed. My personal favorite moment of the game was when he celebrated after working himself out of a tough 2 on base, no outs situation in the top of the fifth.

Vandy will now go onto play Florida for the sixth time this season in their next game. And since the first half of the CWS is double-elimination, the Commodores will need to defeat the Gators twice to advance to the championship series. Hopefully the guys can build off that same intensity they had in today’s game and get themselves a win.

Sadly, this will be the last game I will be able to report for the remainder of the season. I am going on vacation and will not have access to a computer, but you can bet I will be doing my best to keep up with the team. I will write up a summary of whatever happens when I get back.

You probably already knew that the final 3.1 innings were suspended until this morning due to rain. Sadly, those final few innings did not due much good for the Commodores. Not a single hit was registered for either team, and it was absolutely sickening for me to watch all three Vanderbilt batters strikeout in the bottom of the ninth inning. So at the end of game the scoreboard showed the same 3-1 score that it did last night.

Still, our road to being champion does not end today – the route just got changed a bit. Vandy will now be playing an elimination game with North Carolina tomorrow. If Taylor Hill can give us a win then we will go on to play the Gators for a sixth time. Only this time, we will have to beat them twice in a row. And while that is certainly possible, we have got to get some run support first (because our guys have been pitching well enough to win).

So I will talk to you guys tomorrow, hopefully with some good news. Go ‘Dores!

On second thought, that may be a misleading title. Sure, the victory was earned and a 7-3 win looks pretty good on paper, but it does not tell the whole story. In fact, a few Commodore fans just might have biting their nails in the 5th inning with the bases loaded. Sonny Gray seemed to be slipping under the bright lights and there was something in the air that just told fans that the Tar Heels were about to take charge of the game.

Then, the game changing moment came about. Corey Williams replaced Sonny on the mound with the aforementioned bases loaded and 2 outs. Williams made the coaches seem like geniuses as he struckout the final batter of the inning and a sigh of relieve came from the Vanderbilt bench. And soon after that stressful fifth inning, Conner Harrell blasted a two-run homer out of the park in the top of the sixth and the guys seemed to have control from then on out.

And later that night, the most big news came around. Florida defeated Texas 8-4, which means that Vandy has yet another matchup with the Gators coming around on Monday. It will be the fifth time the two teams have met this season (with the Gators holding the series 1-3). Hopefully Grayson Garvin can perform better than Sonny in his first action of the College World Series. We will need it if we plan on taking them down.

Overall, let me tell you that I have never been so excited about our baseball team (which makes since because we have never done this well). I still do not know a whole lot about the game but it makes me extremely happy to see Vanderbilt succeed like they have been. Go ‘Dores!

Vanderbilt had an easy sweep in their Super Regional showdown with the Beavers of Oregon State. Aaron Westlake was the big producer of the decisive game 2 with three homers that brought in six of the crucial runs in the 9-3 game. Commodore fans and players alike were celebrating the big win that sent the team to their first College World Series in school history.

North Carolina, Florida, Texas, South Carolina, California, Virginia, Texas A&M are the other teams to punch their tickets. If you are unaware of how the CWS works, the system is simple to explain. 2 sets of 4-team brackets are made with the same double-elimination rules of the regional games are created with the aforementioned 8 teams. The winners of the two double-elimination brackets will go on to play a best-of-three series that will decide the champion. The seeding of the brackets is yet to be decided until the final two Super Regional games are played. College World Series play starts next weekend. All games will be televised on ESPN/ESPN2.

Vandy will host Oregon State for their first Super Regional hosting in school history. If you did not know, Super Regionals are a best of three series where each team gets at least one home game even though the tourney will be hosted in Nashville (with the home team in game three being decided by a coin flip if necessary). Super Regional play starts Friday.

Belmont gave the Nashville Regional a good story line. While Oklahoma State underwhelmed fans and never even got to play the hosting squad, the Bruins have taken up the role as the second best team in the region and they have even kept their same small school swagger that we are accustomed to. And, as you could probably tell by my text, they won the early game today 5-2 over the Trojans.

However, the Commodores were far from trembling over their neighbor who they crushed just a few days earlier. And Taylor Hill decided to take up the role as the fairy tale killer. The Vanderbilt senior had a career-best 13 strikeouts and gave up only a single run in eight inning of work. Vandy will now move onto to host their first Super Regional in school history after the 6-1 win today.

Any fans have to be incredible excited about this team. Our pitching was outstanding the whole regional and there was plenty of run support to go around as well. If the team can keep up this level of play, they can do anything. Do ‘Dores!

I find it rather ironic how Oklahoma State has preformed this postseason. I remember walking into my history class the day after selections and my teacher (a big sports fan) was telling me how bad of a draw Vanderbilt had gotten with the Cowboys in their bracket. Yet, the only thing that our Big 12 guest has been able to do this entire regional is underachieve. We all know about Oklahoma State’s opening game flop against Troy and things did not get much better for them today either. The Cowboys fell to the fourth seed Bruins (who also got blown out on day one) in a 3-2 game that ends the season for OK State. It is actually a little funny to me how the team that we once thought of as our biggest threat is now eliminated without ever seeing us on the field.

Meanwhile, Vanderbilt has not disappointed its home town fans in any form or fashion. It was smooth sailing once again for the Commodores today as they downed the third seed Trojans in a 10-2 game that Vandy dominated in the later innings. Grayson Garvin had 7 strikeouts in less than 7 innings of work and the offense carried their same double digits runs from day one into game two which sealed a ticket to Game 6 for the Commodores.

Oklahoma State vs Troy

Oklahoma State received a lot of praise from the polls over the season but it is probably safe to say they were exposed yesterday. The underdog Troy Trojans came through with a win after a monster eighth inning gave them a 9-2 lead on the Cowboys. So now OSU is headed down to the losers bracket while Commodore fans were shocked by the upset.

Vanderbilt vs Belmont

The hosting team had no problem defending its field on day one. Vandy blew out the their city rival Belmont 10-0, sending the Bruins straight to the losers bracket. Sonny Gray had a no-no going into the fifth inning before giving up the first hit in his shutout win. Meanwhile, the offense was flowing just as well with Mike Yastrzemski’s three hits and Curt Casali’s three RBIs. It was simply a monster day for the hosting club as they looked ahead to playing the Trojans.

I may one of the least baseball knowledgeable writers on the web, but I have a reputation to get excited at this time of the year. My site is on its third year covering the sport of baseball and while we may do a terrible job keeping up during the regular season, something about the NCAA Tournament just always gets me fired up.

You can expect the same amount of excitement this time around. School is over this week and I will have all the time in the world to keep up with my Commodores baseball. I promise no slacking will be seen by me and viewers can expect a review of each and every game (hopefully there will be a lot of them to review).

Nashville Regional play starts this Friday. Vandy will be hosting Oklahoma State, Troy, and Belmont (it will be pretty cool to see some in-city action). Overall, our team is the sixth seed in the tournament. If you are interested in seeing the entire bracket, click here.

A 10-0 lead after seven innings meant a run-rule win for the Commodores yesterday in their uncompetitive SEC Tournament opener. Next up for the team is a game with the South Carolina Gamecocks tonight. Sonny Gray gets the nod as the squad will attempt to continue their dominant ways.

This is a very short story because there is not much to say and I have some other business to attended to as well. So I will leave you with this random stat for a closing: this post marks the 418 story in the website’s history (not a significant number, but it shows progress).
